We're here with episode twooooo.

Recipe:
... I don't remember where I found the recipe that I found.
The point is that Kugel can be made in a variety of ways and with a variety of ingredients. It is a jewish dish made as a type of pudding or casserole. I think it is supposed to function more as a side dish ... and it also seems like people generally tend to make it into a sweeter dish.
We made a more savory casserole ... and I think that it was okay. So, I won't really share the exact recipe that we made (also because I can't find it and don't remember it).

We cooked 8 carrots and 1 potato. Mashed them all up. Added sugar, flour and an egg. Mashed more. Greased a casserole dish. Put the mashed food in the pan. In the oven for about 30 - 45 minutes. Wonderful.

So we may have chosen this movie largely because we just wanted to watch it, not because we were looking for something super queer. (Although there are things on the internet about Ellen Page. Whatever.) Still, in it's own way it is pretty out there. The movie starts with young Hailey (baaaby Ellen) meeting up with significantly older Jeff in a cafe. They've been chatting online, and it seem Hailey is really interested in getting to know more about Jeff--so much in fact she convinces him to take her back to his place.

Of course the viewer is thinking "no no no creepy old guy!" but that is of course not how things go down because Ellen Page always plays bamfs. Hailey suspects Jeff in the murder of another young girl and has been planning her revenge for a long time. When Jeff tries to plead innocent, saying he only took Hailey home because she "acted like an adult!" and that she "asked for it" Hailey points out that she's not an adult, he is, and it is still his responsibility to behave like one. I think our rape culture has a lot to learn in that little statement.

So I'll leave it at that and not give anything away, but this movie get's more intense than you might suspect. It is also awesome. It is also deliciously color corrected, so art eyes may want to look into it for that too.

Also don't mess with Hailey/Ellen Paige, she's an honors student.
Welcome back. Where have you you been? We've been on hiatus! So I guess this is season 2?
The lateness of this is due partially to the loss of an audio clip that neither of us could find. Partially.
This week we watched Les Amours Imaginaires and made Mazorcada. Get it.

Ok, so lets talk about this mazorcada. It is crazy delicious and super easy/flexible.

You need:
corn (fresh off the cob is far superior!)
potato chips

Then you can add:
onion
tomato
chopped sausage/hotdog/chorizo
cheese
bell pepper
whatever!

And you just fry things, in oil or butter, in a reasonable order. I usually add the corn last so it retains some of its raw crispiness. The chips you crumble and put on top once you're done. Usually you'd use these little potato shreds called "fosforos" (matchsticks) but I haven't found them in the States. Seriously, this is ridiculously delicious for breakfast (add an egg?), lunch, dinner, after drinking.

All Corn All The Time might be my secret motto.
Les Amours Imaginaires
aka Hearbeats
2010 . directed by Xavier Dolan
Trailer

The French title of this movie is the perfect summary... imaginary loves. I don't really know why they decided to go with "Heartbeats" for the english title, but that does generally happen with foreign films, doesn't it?

This is a Canadian film about two close friends who fall for the same person. Initially, Marie and Francis pretend they have no interest in the dashing young man they meet at a dinner party... but as the three become close friends, we find them competing, rather uncomfortably, for Nico's affection.

It's hard to say whether the interactions we see Nico have with the two friends is purposefully teasing and romantic, or if it's all just in Francis and Marie's own heads. I think we can probably all relate to this kind of situation though. Sometimes we just don't know if someone is into us or if we're being crazy... or if they're just fucking with us. It definitely kicks up the anxiety and crazy behaviors in us.

The film is very visually pleasing and has a great soundtrack as well. The story is also intertwined with clips of random, hip French Canadians talking about distraught love. It's quite enjoyable.

That's basically it. I liked it. Francis is my favorite. He's adorable.
So another one of my friends, Audrey, and I recently started a tumblr where we will put queer-related things we make. It's called Well-Adjusted Queer Kids because we are hoping to flesh out the queer narratives one often encounters that are usually depressed gay people or gay people as comic relief, when really queer people are pretty much just people (but cooler. jk. maybe). Anyway, check us out!

I'm glad I'm getting this done before the end of the world happens!
Excuse the tardiness, I've been preparing to travel ... and watching some Real Housewives of Miami in preparation of course.
I had nothing in mind to cook when Syd came over. That said, I think one of the things you should be able to do, as someone who says they cook, is just be able to take whatever you've got in your cabinets and wing it! And that's what we did. It was delicious.

Here's what we worked with:

Cream of mushroom soup
Black Beans (canned)
Corn (canned)
Chicken breast
1/2 an Onion (chopped)
Garlic (diced)
Salt and Pepper
Hawaiian bread rolls

Boil the chicken to thaw (not recommended by all, but as we've mentioned before, this is how we roll) in a medium sized pot.
In a small pot combine corn, black beans, salt & pepper, onion and cream of mushroom.
When the chicken is cooked, take it out of the pot and shred/chop it up. Pour some of the chicken water out, but leave a nice amount for the soup part. Combine shredded chicken and all the contents of the smaller pot into the original chicken pot. (I added some spices, I don't really remember which. But yeah.)
Let it all simmer a bit.
Scoop into bowls.
Eat along with bread rolls.

Yum!

I will be out of town for a week, so expect us back sometime in the New Year!
Directed by Ang Lee
Trailer

Relationships can be trying things, and according to movies and the teevee, weddings seem to be the ultimate test. Like, the actual thing, not the idea of marriage. But this movie is from the 90s, so it is not the happy gay couple Wai-Tung and Simon getting married, it is Wai-Tung marrying Wei-Wei, his starving artist tenant, so she can get a green card and he can get his parents off his back. Of course the parents want to show up for the thing.

Naturally they have to try to play the right parts, but Wei-Wei can't actually cook so Simon sneakily does everything, Wai-Tung creeps off to Simon at night, and things get awkward when Wai-Tung tries to fake affection. Still, they almost pull it off, until at dinner they run into an old family friend who insists he host a huge wedding banquet for them!

Things get bad but end up surprisingly good, watch it and see for yourself! Also, I would like to say I really enjoy the tagline: "A little deception at the reception." Top notch.
I cut it myself, so it is always kind of an experiment in progress. I know that sounds narcissistic and irrelevant, but really no part of my regular life actually ties in with this crazy movie. I was so put off that I said "like" probably as often as a valley girl.

So, these sandwiches are probably the best snack-food-for-a-meal thing ever. Crispy and filled with avocado. A friend introduced me to them in high school and they blew my mind, and I have continued to pass on the delicious since.

Ingredients:
It's like, ¾ of an avocado per person if you like your sandwich stuffed, but ½ is fine, especially if you're adding things.
bread
butter/butter substitute
salt & pepper
veganaise (optional)
tempeh bacon (optional)

Mash up your avocado and add salt & pepper to taste. Sometimes I add garlic or whatever I feel like. You're not really going for guacamole, more savory. Cook the tempeh bacon. (I guess you could use real bacon, but I really like the tempeh texture. Also I can pretend I'm eating well.)

Butter one side of each piece of bread, this will be the outside. This is the secret to perfect crispyness. Slather avocado and some veganaise on the inside of the pieces, lay in some bacon, and put it together and fry it. Devour. (I often cut it in half because it can be kind of messy.)
Heavenly Creatures 1994

Trailer

Directed by Peter Jackson (yes, THE Peter Jackson)

Starring Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey

Oh my goodness.
This movie was so intense... it made us both decide that we never, ever want to have children, because kids are nuts. And murderous. The scariest part is that it was all based on a very true story (yeah, all of it, we wikipedia'd it!)

So. This movie is about these awkward outsiders who meet in private school in New Zealand in the 1950s. They are portrayed by Kate Winset (as Julie) and a scowling Melanie Lynskey (as Paul/Pauline/Gina/Yvonne) in their debut as young aspiring actresses. You all probably know Kate from Titanic and numerous other roles and films. Melanie may not be as familiar to you, as she has not had as many starring roles. BUT, she was in But I'm a Cheerleader, The L Word... some other random things... and unfortunately Two and a Half Men. I like her very much.

ANYWAYS. These two girls are kind of weird and in their own heads a lot, and nobody understand them, etc. Kate is really rich and worldy and Melanie is kind of poor and her family is a little less cultured. They become friends and bond over being creative and artsy, kind of sickly, and super cray. We see their friendship turn into a kind of love and then obsession with each other. It quickly goes from being kind of cute and funny to really scary and dark when people get in the way of their relationship.

It's a wonderfully made movie. The acting and cinematography is brilliant. But it leaves you with this terrible feeling in your gut and your heart... which I guess, speaks for its success as a movie. Regardless, I never want to watch it again.
Though there was girl on girl loving... it was more in an obsessive, crazed nature, and not about identifying as gay. In fact they were pretending to be other people.
But we're back! Since we're already on a roll with being timely, it should come as no surprise that only recently have Lorena and I watched Buffy. Ok so Lorena plowed through it all, I am actually just on season 4. I have a low TV tolerance. Anyway, I was surprised at how easy it is to make gnocchi. I guess I assumed it's deliciousness must have more secrets? Well, it doesn't.
Sorry it's a little longer than usual.... we had a lot to say. There was a TON I cut out. Syd will discuss in text. I'll keep this part short. Here is the recipe:

Sweet Potato Gnocci

Okay, this is really easy.
Cook a Sweet Potato/Yam in an oven until it is soft.
Mash it up
SLOWLY add one cup of flour per sweet potato/yam and kneed into a dough. Add more flour if the dough is still sticky.
Roll the dough into thin little snakes and cut them up into little gnocci shapes.
Boil water and add gnocchi.
Cook. Strain.
Add sauce of your liking.

(I think you could season the dough if you felt so inclined. Maybe add some rosemary or something.)
Where to begin. Ok, "In every generation there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer." Enter Buffy, an attractive young California high schooler who's always got a snappy comeback ready, whether it be for the school bully or a lumbering vampire. Sunnydale High happens to be situated on top of a hell mouth—an opening into hell, duh—so Buffy and her friends are plenty occupied with not only the usual highschool drama, but also the various creatures attracted to the hell mouth or trying to come out of it.

So think your usual cast of enjoyable characters, plus supernatural hijinx! It's a surprisingly thoughtful show at times, moral issues are not black and white and sometimes things don't get a satisfying resolution. Regardless of vampires, it is no ideal other world the show is set in—popular kids and sports rule the school, parents are absent or divorced, college is impending but not a given—it is very relatable. Also, it's way 90s, heh. Also also, we think it's kind of queer. Despite what seems like the obvious setup of the hot female superhero trope, Buffy is no shallow object, and she will not have you patronizing her. Being a Slayer was not her choice, but being femme is. Also there are actual lesbian happenings but not till season 4, but you should know it is still worth watching to get to that point.
We made plantains as a side because I had one that needed to be used, but otherwise I would have made fry bread or maybe rice. This recipe is a permutation of one in Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan.

In a medium-large soup pot on medium heat add 1 tbs olive oil and saute
2 cups chopped zucchini
2 bay leave
Bring it to a boil then turn down the heat and simmer until the lentils are cooked (about 20-25 min). Now put maybe a little more than half of it in a blender and puree it, then add it back (if you want you can puree the whole thing, but this leaves some nice texture). Serve with lemon juice squeezed in! (I used half a lemon for the two of us)
GHOSTED 2009
Directed by Monika Treut
Trailer

Ai-ling is a young Taiwanese waitress working in her mother's restaurant. When she is finally given permission to travel to Germany to visit her uncle (and secretly to uncover information about her deceased father's past), her whole life changes. She falls in love. And then other things happen that are less pleasant.

Set between flashbacks and present day Germany and Taiwan, this movie follows our main girl Ai-ling and her girlfriend Sophie, as well as Mei-li, a journalist, who is for some unknown reason persistently interested in Sophie and her relationship with her now recently deceased lover. Through these characters we slowly uncover that truth behind Ai-ling's death, but we are still not left with a complete sense of closure.

It's kind of weird, but it's actually not as bad as I made it out to be in the vlog. It was enjoyable. Honestly, I was a little bored... but I was also doing household chores.

It's not like the queerest thing I've seen..... but, I mean, we don't even get a sense of their relationship being weird because it's two ladies. Sure, they aren't like super out to the family, but they know, and they know that they know, and we know that they know, and there's no "wahhhh, I'm gay" sob story. This is like real life. And I want their cute little gay bar.

Syd: 4.5

I get all that, but Sophie's family doesn't care because she doesn't talk to them, and I kind of feel like why Ai-ling's family doesn't talk about it is not because they're ok with it but because it would be more embarrassing for the family to disown her because of it. And these are older people we're talking about, maybe they already had their gay meltdown. Yeah the queer doesn't come up, but...I dunno, whatevs.

I've seen and interacted with a number of known/famous people while living in LA and working where I do, but I have never been as star struck in everyday life as I was earlier this week.

I wouldn't have thought that Ben Savage would have this effect on me... The more I thought about it though, I realized that he was a HUGE part of my childhood. My brothers and I (and I'm sure many of you in our generation) were raised on Boy Meets World. It's not about celebrity status, it's about the impact he had on my young life. Cory Matthews and the gang were our friends! We cared about them! ... Is this weird? It feels weird writing it out like this. Let's move on.

A milanesa is basically just a breaded ... meat. It can be chicken, beef, fish, etc. It's very typical in Argentina and most of South America. It's a delicious thing to have all around the globe really, with different countries specializing in it in their own way. Add some fries and a salad, and you have yourself a well balanced dinner!

You will need:

- Thin steak cutlets (or other meat of your choice)

- Eggs

- Bread Crumbs (I usually have a batch that I acquired from putting stale french bread through a food processor and keeping it in a jar in the fridge. Or you can toast bread and then put it through the food processor.)

- Garlic

- Vegetable Oil

- Lime

- Sides (french fries, salad, fried egg, etc)

Begin by setting aside a bowl of whisked eggs and a bowl of bread crumbs. I like to mix in a diced garlic clove in the egg bowl. If you wish to have fries to accompany your meal, you should put those in the oven now too.

The most important thing to remember when making milanesas is to use very thin cutlets. You can use a kitchen hammer, or anything heavy, to pound down on your choice of meat to make it thinner if it isn't already. Once this is done, dip your meat into the egg bowl, making sure to completely drench it. The next stop is the bread crumb bowl. Bury the cutlet deep into the crumbs and roll it around. Make sure the meat is entirely covered in crumbs.

Now you are ready for the frying pan! Use A LOT of oil to cook the milanesas, but please don't burn yourself (Syd has a tragic story about burning up an entire arm with hot oil). It should only take a few minutes to have both sides crispy and ready to go.

Once done, place your milanesa, fries and salad on a plate, and enjoy! Some people also like to add a fried egg on top of the finished product. The milanesa will be extra delicious drizzled in lime juice.

Now the brother has converted it into a church and Mona is not taking it well and feels like she's lost him. Tammy lives off in some mansion and has a horse and plays cello and name drops Nietzsche and Freud when they first hang out. She also has some family troubles, but largely just seems bored.
They start hanging out all the time and quickly become entirely codependent. Fun fact: I'm largely culturally illiterate because I did not watch TV as a child and so had no idea who Ben Savage was. I just wanted to say that incase you didn't either and felt alone. I think the most famous person I've seen was the guy who played Wolverine, and that was not in LA but at a Renaissance Faire where I worked. (y'know what, it was fun and it payed well) It is true that I have a horrific oil burn story. You should ask me about it sometime, in retrospect it's quite humorous.
Ou…Well, that, along with a few other useful phrases, is the extent of my French currently, so it's a good thing subtitles are a thing. Although in part of my quest to know everything I also want to know all the languages(!), but that will probably take some time. Lucky for you, I do already know how to separate egg whites. I didn't always of course, and once as a kid I was trying to make my sister a surprise birthday cake and thought "egg whites" probably just meant "white eggs." You won't make this mistake, and instead will have perfect pumpkin pancakes. (Or waffles. Oh man I wish I still had a waffle iron.)

I know you might be thinking, "yo Syd, I just mix flour and water and get some ok pancakes." Or even just, "yo, Bisquick is a thing." Trust me, this is better. Have you not learned that things from scratch are always better yet?

There are two ways to do this: Mix everything just going down the list, except pausing to beat the egg whites stiff in a separate bowl, OR, Mix the wet and dry separately, still doing the egg whites on their own. Because these are not finicky pancakes and I like minimal dishwashing I go with the former method, but as always, you do you.
La Cage aux Folles 1978
Directed by Edouard Molinaro
(Crappy) Trailer

This is the story of a very entertaining gay couple Renato and Albin, who make a living off of a drag club they own and work at. Renato manages and Albin, known as Zaza on stage, is the star performer.

They are very successful and happy in their lives, but things get stirred up when Renato's son announces that he is getting married... and that his fiancee's parents are ultra conservative politically directed people who are coming to meet them.

With the help of their assortment of friends and employees, they set out to de-gay themselves and their lives for the sake of their son's engagement.
A broadway musical adaptation came out in 1983. The American remake, based and shot in my hometown of South Beach, FL, starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, was released in 1996 and is also amazing.
I was watching Glee last night and I realized... well, after very recently watching Willow and Tara on Buffy, I feel so much less excited about what we're given on television in terms of queer lady couples. How is it possible that ten years later it feels like we're actually getting less?
ANYWAYS....

You know when you press record and then you actually didn't record and then you click to stop recording, but then you're actually recording? The point is... I didn't purposely cut Syd out of things.
Recipe

My mom always sends me Peruvian things to eat and cook with. I recently had all this Huacatay paste and I didn't really know what to do with it... until I realized that's what you use to make Ocopa*!

So... this was kind of experimental, but I think it came out pretty good!

Ingredients:

Note that I am not very good at following recipes to the exact amounts. The following is roughly how we did it based on what I felt was right... and it'll probably change the next time I do it.

Huacatay Paste - full jar (the jar is about 7oz)

Aji Amarillo - a few tsps depending on how spicy you like things

Saltine crackers - 3 or 4

Peanuts - 1/4 of a cup

Potatoes - 3 or 4

Red Onion - 1/2

Garlic - 2 or 3 cloves

Vegetable oil

Queso Fresco or Cottage Cheese - 2/3 cup

(the actual recipe calls for queso fresco, but cottage cheese can be used as a cheaper alternative)

Evaporated milk - 1/2 cup or more

Salt

Eggs - one per person

Lettuce - a few leaves to garnish the plate

In a big pot, boil your potatoes. This should take about 30 - 40 minutes. You can add the eggs at about the 25 minute mark. You know the potatoes are ready when you can easily poke a fork through them.

While this is happening you can chop and sauté your onion. Add the garlic, huacatay and aji amarillo. Stir these all together and let it all cool. Don't let things get crispy.

Separately, combine chopped peanuts, crumbled crackers and cheese in a bowl.

Put all of these things in a blender. Gradually add the evaporated milk to reach your desired creaminess.

Once the potatoes and eggs are done, carefully rinse and peel them (they will be hot!) Cut the potatoes in half the long way and place them on your lettuce garnished plate. Pour your sauce (that's what you've got in the blender) onto the potatoes. Slice the eggs in half and place them on top of your creation. You can also add olives on top if you like that sort of thing.

Trailer

As if adopting a child for a gay family wasn't an ordeal enough, when Sven and Göran finally complete their process it turns out that the cute month and a half year-old they were hoping for is actually a surly, homophobic 15 year old. Their ideal family takes a hit in more ways than one as this new stress turns out to be more than they can handle.

I initially expect this movie to be much more of a comedy, although now that I think about it there is nothing funny about homophobia so maybe I am glad it didn't actually go that way. Instead we see Patrik, the teenager, as sort of a voice for the entire town's subtle misgivings about a gay couple. From Göran's awkward work confrontations (he is a doctor) to neighbors' rude comments, it is clear that it would take more than a baby to make the new couple fit in.

It is also a story about Patrik learning to fit in. As he gradually grows to appreciate people and see them as people he relates to and that relate to him he becomes someone a family actually wants to adopt. For how all this finally plays out you will have to watch the movie yourself, but I will say that it ends well (and certainly has comedic moments).
We've missed you. Have you missed us? Well, you may or may not have noticed that there was no post last week. It's really all my fault, I was completely distracted with life things and work and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Seriously though, what an amazing television series. If you haven't watched it, please do. It's on netflix.

This was supposed to be posted last week as a mini post since it was a busy week, but instead it's being posted today. We have a short short followed by a short recipe. Next week we will have a whole, real post with a vlog and everything!
I feel like we've all had these moments, gay or straight, bus or somewhere else. You see someone, they see you, you look away... and then you wonder if they're looking at you in the same way you're looking at them or if they're just looking at you because you looked at them and they think you're weird! It's funny. It's frustrating!

I think that being queer, I often get stuck on the part where only a tiny percent of the population is also queer, hence this person probably is not and I'm creeping her out now.

Regardless, I think this experience resonates with us all. I like the end where she just laughs at herself.
Next time someone on the bus smiles at you, talk to them. For me. And may the odds be ever in your favor... yeah, I did that. -Lore
Well good, 'cus we've got some.

So Lorena's computer crashed and we lost a lot of our witty banter and cooking instruction, but don't worry, we filled the vlog time with something equally entertaining:

There was a lot more to the 5 am sing-a-long, but you'd have to get drunk and kick it with us to really get the full experience. A working knowledge of 90s hits or Tegan and Sara is a must.

It has been hot hot hot in L.A. so I was really not interested in eating a particularly hot meal, luckily I thought of cold soba noodles! The peanut sauce is of the spicy variety and not of the creamy, made-with-coconut-milk variety. This recipe is from Vegan With A Vengeance, my first cookbook from my angry high school days. Cookbooks are good for browsing in a way that looking at internet recipes is frequently not, and as long as you are not a crazy carnivore I definitely recommend it.

For the sauce you will need:
2 tsp peanut oil (I used sesame oil, you could probably get away with vegetable oil)
2 cloves minced garlic
2 tb minced ginger
1 cup water
2 tb soy sauce
1 tsp coriander*
⅔ cup peanut butter
2 tb maple syrup
3 tb rice vinegar
2 tsp Asian chile sauce (or hot sauce of some form)

Sauté the garlic and ginger in the oil. Add everything up to the peanut butter and bring to a boil. Add the peanut butter and everything else, mix, then turn off heat and set aside.

This sauce works well for a 10 oz. package of noodles, but that is about 4 servings so you could make less and save some sauce. The recipe actually calls for udon, but I was feeling more soba-y. Cook the noodles, then drain and run cold water over them. Or you could have made the noodles previously and put them in the fridge. When serving you want them quite cold, the sauce to be at room temperature, and the seitan still warm. Remember to put a little oil on them before draining since when they get cold they will want to form a solid lump.

Slice up your seitan (or meat thing) and sauté it in peanut sauce with garlic and ginger, maybe some soy sauce. I threw in a little pepper too, you do you. Put it on your noodles and add the sauce. It is recommended that you sprinkle something on top like julienned cucumber or mung beans. We did chives and red pepper. Eat!

*Spices are perhaps another one of my personal causes: buy them, learn to use them, they are worth it. I was not stoked to only find $4 coriander, but it'll last and that means it's good. Why do things taste so good when you go out to eat? Spices man. If you ever see me just throw together breakfast potatoes I'll use at least three, not including salt if I'm doing savory.
-Syd
Facing Mirrors (2011)
Directed by Negar Azarbayjani

So we went to see this movie at the Downtown Independent, where we were told a neat story of how the DVD copy of the film was secretly transported all over the place before making it to Outfest, since the movie has been banned in Iran. Very cool.

This is an Iranian film, following two assigned female people, Rana and Adineh (prefereably known as Eddie). Both characters have to transgress gender norms put in place by society and their families in order to survive in their own ways.

Rana's husband is currently in jail, so to make ends meet she is secretly driving around his car as a taxi service (although she only takes women). Eddie is planning to escape from Iran to avoid being forced to marry a man (his father's way of "fixing" his trans problems) and to continue his transition in Germany. The two meet by chance when Rana picks him up after he was almost assaulted by two men on the side of the road. She initially reads him as a woman and becomes very uncomfortable and surprised when Eddie tells her about being trans. Although Rana reacts very negatively towards Eddie at first, we see how the two characters progress throughout the movie in getting to truly know and understand each other. Eddie also seems to have a lot of disposable income and a backpack that fits lots of changes of clothes.

It was really cool to see this issue discussed in a setting different than what we know in our day to day. Different cultures have such different history and language regarding queer issues and people, that even having a conversation about sex and gender can become so different whether you're in the US, or Iran, or South America... etc. It's interesting and can spark a lot of conversation. Ahem... if you'd like to have that conversation.
Anyway, Lorena has a bug of some sort and I do not want to get that** so this week we are separately sharing some queer music videos with you instead! Maybe you can rock out to them while you cook up your own creation or use them as mood music or something. It is entirely your call, I just wanted a title that rhymed.

Avicii - Silhouettes
So depending where you hang out on the internet you may have heard about this, but just incase I thought I'd share. While neither the song nor artist are particularly queer, the video focuses on the transition of a trans woman. Aside the swift and unsubtle cucumber chop, I think it is a pretty well done video that doesn't sensationalize it or anything. It is not positing that to be a woman you need "the surgery," or that you need to be femme, that is just this particular character's life. Illustrating just changing pronouns or a less "traditional" journey would be tricky. Maybe they didn't even change pronouns! The point is just that they have moved into a new life adventure and are not looking back, and that Avicii, a comparatively mainstream artist, chose to illustrate that this way is kind of nice. But maybe you think otherwise? Holla.
L.P. - Stupid Song
Aight, less chatter this time since L.P. can pretty much speak for herself. Androgynous queerio that can play the ukelele and whistle something fierce. I can't actually decide if I like her voice, but she seems way cool regardless. I really wanted to embed this video, but I can't, but you should watch it too. She's also done some good covers.
Bonus: Sam Sparrow's Black and Gold has been my latest guilty pleasure earworm, and he is a gay boy. Also, this Kaki King cover of LoveStoned. Also also Le1f, because he is proud to be a gay rapper, but yo, gay rap is not a genre.

So, that is what I am bringing to the musical potluck. What are you bringing? That's right, comment. I'm starting to feel like an angsty teen with a shitty xanga or something. -Syd

*As people have pointed out, and I agree, I am actually already a grouchy old man. In the body of an artsy-grunge boi.

**Kind of kidding, but a chicken noodle soup dinner and a sickly video didn't sound like a good crowd-pleaser.

I have indeed fallen ill... I tried to ward the sickness off with lots of vitamin C pills and echinacea, but I suppose the road trip to San Fran didn't help much and may have even countered the effects of the aforementioned...
I have queer musical videos for you as well. My theme is silly pop.

Valeria (ft. Aria) - Girl I told Ya
This song is very silly. This video is very silly. It is all just VERY silly. My friend Sarah and I discovered it a while back and I still think it's absolutely hilarious. I'm 99.9% sure this artist is actually straight and I don't really know what the reasoning behind this video was, but I totally dig the Victorian theme and video gaming going on here... amongst other things. Yeah, hate all you want, I think it's sexy:

Before Katy Perry's song about kissing a girl, but not actually kissing a girl for real, made it big, there was another artist who came out with a song of the same title. The video is also very silly, but I have a deep appreciation of what it was for the mainstream in the 90s and how progressive it actually continues to be today.
This is also one of the first songs I learned to cover and I enjoy it so very much.
I Kissed a Girl - Jill Sobule

Great! Hope you guys enjoyed, let us know what you think.

Did you know that I am actually blonde? It's true, as a kid I had super blonde, super straight, long hair—every SoCal girls' dream right? I was too busy being weird to really use my attracting powers though. That is until I switched high schools and chopped it off and dyed it and became a person my mother warned me about. Nothing like realizing you're queer to switch things up, amiright? Worked out ok for Eilin and Agnes anyway.

Er, but yeah, so I've been thinking about trying to go back to blonde to at least see it and I thought I could expedite the process by trying that "color out" stuff or whatever. Well it took all the color out of the sides but left the longer top slightly orange. These things happen. Sorry I fidget with it so much in the video, I needed a haircut. -Syd

Recipe!

You will need:

Chicken

Broccoli (we liked adding a veggie, you don't have to)

Corn Tortillas

Enchilada sauce (you can make it from scratch too, but we're going for quick and easy for your date ;)

Cheese

Hot sauce

Vegetable Oil

SOUR CREAM - don't forget the sour cream.

Cook the chicken and broccoli as the oven preheats (at about 400). Once they are done, you can shred the chicken, chop up the broccoli and combine them. Mix in some enchilada sauce.

Dip the tortillas into your bowl of still remaining sauce and fry them on a little bit of oil one by one.

Spread them out on the bottom of a casserole dish, fill in the middle with the chicken, and then add a top layer of tortilla. I like to do it this way, instead of rolling up individual tortillas, but to each his own.

Pour the rest of the sauce on top and sprinkle on lots of cheese. Put the dish in the oven for about ten minutes. Once it's done don't forget to add some hot sauce and sour cream to balance out the meal. Enjoy!

In the small town of Amal, Sweden, Agnes has just turned 16. She is very timid and basically a social outcast. Her parents decide to throw her a birthday party (with invitations and everything) even though she doesn't have any friends. Oh, and she is in love with Elin.

Elin is very popular, beautiful and rebellious. She likes to go to raves and make out with boys. She is also always talking about how terribly bored she is with everything. There seems to be something missing in her life. In one of her bouts of boredom, Elin drags her sister, Jessica, to go to Agnes' birthday party instead of their friend's house party. That night and the next few days will give you lots of feelings. Not all good, but not all bad. Elin realizes what it is she's been missing, as well as how hard it is to have it, and Agnes wishes she didn't have to wait so long for things to get better.

This movie does a great job of showing genuine teenage angst, as well as the struggle for kids to fit in with their peers but also into their own selves. I also enjoyed that the characters were played by actors who are actually that age and not by 25 year olds. (Sidenote: it is not all angst, there are some pretty funny parts.)

We are now in the double digits of our dinner dates and it is very exciting. The movie we watched this week is Argentine like half of my background (my daddy's half) and the dinner we made was French (sort of) like the language I set my phone to in hopes that I'll learn it and then have a lot of trouble setting back to a language I actually know.
That's all I've got, here's the video.

When my mother used to make this she more often put the filling in those little crispy pastry shell things, but if you can't procure those crepes are also delicious. Plus leftovers are good for dessert.

Crepes
2 tbs butter
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water
2 eggs
pinch of salt
1 cup flour

Make sure your pan is hot and has a little butter or something in it. Tilt the pan around once you put some batter in so it'll spread out thin. You may think it's too thin, it's probably not. Don't wander off as it needs to be flipped over pretty quick.

Filling
Truth: I never actually measure when I make this. And you don't have to either! (but here are guesstimates)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup diced chicken (usually I boil it, but I'm sure baked leftovers would work fine too)
1/2 cup of chopped onions
1 cup diced green apple (seriously, delicious)
handful of raisins

Cook the onions, then add everything else. Although if you don't like your raisins rehydrated wait to add them near the end. Don't forget to add water if you are using condensed soup. Let it all heat up and stew a bit, then pour it in your crepes! Voilá!
I don't know what I was expecting, but not this. The tagline on Wikipedia is "A young, naïve clerk at a lingerie store learns about love and her own identity." Netflix says that two lesbians kidnap some girl and I think shit is going down; and for sure stealing a cab is serious business, but then the rest of the movie does not go where you would expect it. Moving from slightly edgy to a sort of deadpan comedy, the ending comes as a strangely sweet surprise. Hence the "suddenly" I guess.

The kidnappers/lovers are an odd pair, and not only because they call each other Mao and Lenin (which is kind of cute in a weird way). One turns out to be kind of a jerk, the other one is actually quite nice. The kidnappee is probably the least interesting of the characters and is more of someone for the other two to play off of. (ok she has her own story, but she is not that exciting)

At risk of detracting from your experience of this winding art-house movie I will leave it at that, but if you watch it please do discuss that ending in the comments. Also: "I'm not a lesbian." "I'm not either!"
Overall Rating
Syd: 3/8 While we were initially joking that that black & white is very Clerks, this actually does remind me of Mallrats in that it's all about random little scenes and not really a plot. They connect of course, but there is no "driving force" so to speak, so depending how you like your movies you might want to know that.
Lore: 1.5/8 Yeah, I know weird rating, but that's how I felt. I didn't really dislike it that much. Thinking back I think I definitely enjoyed it... I really did.
Sorry, anyway, here we are! I've been meaning to watch this movie for awhile so it's nice we got around to it. Queer children seem to be a very happening topic these days—the J.Crew lady lets her boy paint his toenails, a few parents have refused to tell the sex of their child and everyone was making a fuss about it ruining hir identity but pretending to be progressive (pft, please), there was even a New York Times article (although I could not actually get through it, ught) about trans* kids. But then I read something awful and remember that I frequently lurk on the queer side on the internet, where it is easy to forget that Fuck Yeah Trans Parents is not a sentiment the majority stands behind.

Cilantro Pesto
This recipe is for a very satisfying appetizer that turns out different every time I make it.

Ingredients:
Cilantro bunch
Handful of almonds (or other type of nut variation)
A few garlic cloves
Olive oil
Bread (I would suggest a nice baguette, but any bread sliced into fun shapes will do)
Possible extra ingredient *

Chop up all of your ingredients and put them in a food processor. Drizzle in olive oil and mix to your desired consistency. (In the video we mixed our ingredients in a blender, making the end result a bit chunky, as opposed to a more creamy pesto that the food processor creates.)
Scoop spoonfuls of pesto onto the slices of bread and place them in (preferably) a toaster oven, or normal oven if you don't have the former.
In about 5 minutes your impressive appetizers will be ready to be enjoyed by you and your date!

*In the past I've also topped the pesto with pureed carrots. Feel free to experiment with different things.

It's summer somewhere in France. Mikhael and his family have just moved into a new home. Though a little shy, he is befriended by a neighborhood girl who introduces him to the rest of the kids in the building. He soon becomes one of the group and joins them in their daily outdoor fun. Life seems good; innocent and uncomplicated.

We come to find that Mikhael is actually assigned female and is referred to in her house as Laure. She has an adorable (and very intelligent) little sister and two wonderful parents. Her mother is pregnant with a third child and stays at home with the kids, while their father is at work. Once Laure steps out of the house she is able to secretly (and very craftily) pass as Mikhael to the neighborhood kids, until the inevitable happens, and the secret is revealed.

What's interesting about this movie is the different perspectives we get. We see gender and identity through the eyes of all these characters of varying ages and experiences. We see Mikhael's very conscious observations of boy and girl behaviors, as well as the moments of discomfort and satisfaction he experiences trying to fit into his identity. We see how the other children, the little sister and the neighborhood kids, perceive and accept gender in different ways. And we see the individual adult's reactions and behaviors in response to Laure's "pretending."

This is a wonderful movie that will definitely inspire some thought provoking dialogue. Enjoy!
Queer Rating
Lorena: 8 - I just love the way this movie gets into the simplicity and complexities of gender.
Syd: 7.5 - sidenote, I am not sure why I referred to the main character as "she" the whole time except that that was how the premise of the movie was presented when I encountered it, but clearly Laure would choose to be "he," but is that because then he gets to play soccer and take his shirt of or is it because he "feels like a boy" or or or….
So, Syd went out of town somewhere*... which means no vlog or normal length movie/review this week.
What I am offering instead is this short film called "Unspoken" that I found on Autostraddle.
This film is exciting because Troian Bellisario plays a teen lesbian. You might know this actress from a little show on ABC Family called Pretty Little Liars. I love PLL. I also love all of the actresses on it.
I don't love this short, but I enjoyed seeing Spencer loving on a girl non-platonically.
See for yourself:

As for this week's recipe, I will actually be giving you tips on how to make a poached egg.
I don't really know why people make/eat poached eggs, I personally prefer any of the other types, but I enjoy being able to say that I can do it. This is how:
1. Crack the egg into a little bowl first, not directly into the water.
2. Bring the water to a level of heat that is just below a simmer. DO NOT boil it.
3. Pour a little bit of white vinegar into the water (they say this helps keep the egg together and cook and what not ... I don't know if that's all true, but I do it because it never fails me.)
4. Once your water is at a temperature just below simmering, gently TIP the egg into the water.
5. Use a spoon to nudge your egg together before putting a lid on the pot and letting it do its thing.
6. Wait like 3 minutes or so.
7. Scoop it out with a spoon or ladle ... season ... yum.

If you're still having difficulties, you can come over and I can demonstrate for you. I have this thing with eggs. I like to make them. There are so many different ways...
This casserole is very flexible and flavorful, but it is way better with the sauce, so I suggest taking the time for it too. Written and Directed by Marco Berger
Trailer

So, Bruno breaks up with his girlfriend because he "got bored," but when he sees her several months later with a new guy he decides he wants her back. Despite sleeping with Bruno again, she flatly refuses and he decides to hatch a new plan—seduce her new boyfriend instead! I won't spoil how that unfolds for you, but with a premise like that and a blog like this I think you can guess how things might go (although perhaps not in the way you're expecting.)

Despite it being kind of a jerk move, can I just say that I really enjoy that Bruno thinks this is a reasonable idea at all? It is treated sort of as a joke, it is a "funny" premise because "haha straight-looking man pretending to be gay! It's home-wrecking but it's silly!" but that is also sort of the reality of the world and makes his movement past that all the more of an interesting change/conflict.

The movie itself is quite long. Not because a lot happens per se, but because every scene feels like it has an extra ten seconds or something, and there are a lot of silent, still city shots (which are nice but…). This is very good for capturing awkward moments and gives the whole movie a very mellow feel, but just maybe don't sit down to watch this after you're had coffee or something. There is also an excellently done high scene.

So all-in-all, an ok film if you want an off-beat romantic comedyish thing with some Argentinian Spanish thrown in.

There isn’t a ton of dialogue around what the relationship means, or consideration of what their place is within society. On the one hand, you miss out on typically lesbian movie dialogue, but I enjoy that the couple is actually queer (as opposed to one lesbian + straight girl with crush). Also, during sexy time, there’s an extended shot of Violet topping Corky, and I love that subversion of expectations, that the film queers the idea of butch/femme and the viewer’s expectation that Corky will do the seducing and give pleasure. I actually enjoy that the film isn’t about coming out or dealing with lesbian couple as lesbian couple -- they just get to be characters caught up in an action film who happen to be queer, instead of having to be characters placed in the film as queer.

Lucky for me actually, since with no video you don't get to see how I awkwardly dyed the side of my face when I re-did my hair.

I couldn't decide on a simple recipe to share so instead I am going to link you to Fresh Cherry Hand Pies as explained by Dessert for Two. That whole site is probably relevant to your dinner-date interests since we don't do desserts but a thoughtful something-sweet can definitely improve your score for the evening. (or even help you score. Hah, ok let's agree to forget that I said that.)

Well hopefully you're doing productive things with your week too. Next week we will try to do our boozy guest post for reals, until then (and always), stay gold!

"Why don't you want me to meet your friends... Are you ashamed of me?"
Before becoming one of my favorite lesbian oriented movies of all time, D.E.B.S was a delightful 10 minute short. DEBS are an elite group of female super spies/crime fighters. Their arch nemesis, Lucy in the Sky, is constantly kidnapping a particular squad's leader, Amy. We come to find that the two have a much more complicated relationship than that of everyday villain and hero...
You can watch DEBS the short film by clicking here
(The feature film is also <s>hilarious and</s> easily found on the internets)
Cool things to note:
Tammy Lynn Michaels.
Jill Ritchie, the wonderful actress who plays Janet, is kept on for the feature length version.
Both the short (2003) and the feature film (2004) were written and directed by Angela Robinson (The L Word, GirlTrash!)
Jordana Brewster (Fast and the Furious) plays Lucy in the feature.

The characters are wonderfully written, the plot is absolutely silly/amazing, and if you don't love it... then I don't want to be your friend.
I ordered some teriyaki meatballs that turned out to be dipped in magic, and so the mission to recreate the sauce began. There were many enjoyable iterations, but not until a few weeks ago did we discover that the secret ingredient is mirin—so don't leave it out! It is a sweet cooking sake that you can probably procure somewhere with international goods or at a Japanese grocery store. After you find the ingredients this recipe is plenty easy and crazy tasty, definitely appropriate for wowing others. (I should note, this is not your gooey sweet teriyaki sauce, this is flavor I cannot even describe.)

Bring ⅔ cup mirin to boil in a saucepan/small pot and simmer for 5 minutes.
Reduce heat and add:
1 cup soy sauce (or tamari, for the gluten-free)
4 ½ tsp. rice vinegar
1 tsp sesame oil
⅓ cup white sugar (honey or maple syrup have also proven delicious)
4 cloves of garlic, minced (give or take, your call)
1 tbs. minced fresh ginger (I only had powdered on hand and it was fine)
Dash of red pepper flakes and black pepper (to taste)
(initial recipe from allrecipes)

Now that you've got that, I suggest pouring it over some ground meat (we went with turkey) and letting it marinate for about half an hour. Then fry it up! You kind of want to squeeze the extra sauce out of the balls when you make them so they firm up.* Serve along side rice and broccoli for full dinner effect.
*ugh, meat. Don't forget to wash it before you start. And freeze leftovers. Since I went vegan before I really started cooking I never learned how to deal with meat and sometimes I forget these things.
Trailer

I was hesitant about this movie at first because the trailer made me think "too boy-centric and seemingly boring," but after I watched it I was blown away because it is just a REALLY good movie.

True to the title, the movie takes place over a weekend in Nottingham, England. After a night hanging out with his straight friends, Russell ventures off to a gay club to find some company. He meets Glen, and what starts off as a potential one night stand becomes something a lot more meaningful.

The two have this wonderful balance. Glen, the outspoken artist who doesn't "do boyfriends," is radical and constantly challenging social conventions. Russell, who is kind of awkward and shy, seems to be weighed down by his internalized homophobia, but has his own introspective views on life, happiness, and sexuality.

If you're hard of hearing or have trouble understanding accents, I suggest putting on some subtitles because the conversations are the best part of this movie. We found ourselves nodding and knowingly glancing at each other throughout. I actually teared up quite a bit with my hand clenched over my heart.

Overall rating
Syd: 8/10 teriyaki meatballs
Lore: 7/10 teriyaki meatballs

Queer rating
Unanimously 10 out of 10 teriyaki meat balls.
There is a part where Glen is talking about straight people not seeing gay things because "it's not their world, they'll go see murders, pictures of refugees, but gay sex? Fuck off." And it's so true! Make your straight friends watch this with you to questions their inherited story lines.

I tried reviewing this the best that I could without giving too much away. If you're into discussion and/or talking about norms and queerness, watch the movie and let us know what you think!
Welcome to date cinq (5). Syd and I are happy to have you with us.

I feel like this renedezvous is a good time to share something very personal. The internet often overwhelms me. I don't understand the twitter or the pinstagram or how a tumblr is different than what livejournal used to be.
What I do know is that sometimes as I get lost in the jumble, I find neat stuff.
I found this recipe on a fantastic blog/website, which I acquired from a friend's tumblr, which she linked to me on facebook. It's networking on a whole different level! And it's delicious. enjoy!

You will need :
2-3 Zucchinis
1 can of black beans
1 handful of oats
marinara/tomato/somesortof sauce
bread crumbs
maybe some soy sauce
vegetable oil

Start by julienning (cutting into matchstick-like pieces) the zucchini. Have someone drain and mash the can of black beans as you do this. Add a handful of oats to the mashed beans. Mash some more.
Fry the zucchini in some oil. Add some soy sauce if you like that.
Make little bean balls out of your bean concoction and coat them with bread crumbs. Fry said bean balls in some oil. You can add some soy sauce to these as well. Place bean balls on zucchini as if they are pasta. Pour warm sauce on top.
Enjoy. Discover other simple and easy recipes on www.theveganstoner.com YUM!

Water Lilies (2007)
Written and Directed by Céline Sciamma
Trailer

The trailer soundtrack is kind of misleading in my mind, I feel like there was actually a very noticeable quietness to this movie. Maybe it was just the awkward.

Set in a suburb somewhere in France, Water Lilies* focuses on three girls in their coming-of-age suffering. Anne is part of a synchronized swimming group and one day her friend Marie comes to see her perform. Marie instead takes note of another team's captain, Florian, and becomes infatuated. She does all she can to join the team, but sort of ends up just tagging along. Florian uses this dedication as sort of an ego boost and also Marie as an alibi for her going out and meeting boys. Anne also has boy troubles, but instead of getting too much attention it's that she can't get attention from the one she wants. Her dedication is also eventually abused, and so really nobody ends up happy. Still, as Wikipedia eloquently says, they "come to learn the true meaning of arousal and the power of sexual attraction," so that's something right?
Syd: Like I said, I am very on the fence, which is sort of an unusual feeling for me since I usually just like or dislike movies. (I am really not a movie person, don't ask) 5 out of 10 beanballs.
But both are great so I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

When I left Bogotá there was a hole in my heart that I had normally filled with delicious fresh juices. Forced to move on from lulo and maracuyá, I latched on to the rice drink horchata. Hoping to curb my addiction's cost I decided to try making it, and it's easy! Witness:

Soak 2 cups of rice overnight in 3 cups of water with a cinnamon stick. (if you only have ground cinnamon, just throw some in later)
The next day, throw it all in a blender for maybe 2-3 min. until smooth.
Strain through something pretty fine, depending how you feel about chunks.
Add 3 cups of water, ⅓ cup of sugar (or to taste), and ½ tbs of vanilla.
Enjoy over ice or stick it in the fridge for later! (it will separate, don't worry, just shake before serving.)

There are many many variations I'm sure the internet can tell you all about if you want. Some people add almond milk instead of the later cups of water, or you can soak almonds with the rice in the beginning. The original horchata is from Spain and is made with chufa nuts, and several Latin American countries have some sort of variation to this Mexican version. It is delicious and refreshing, and pairs particularly well with spicy food. And rum. It keeps for about 5 days I'd say.

So now that you've got that…steeping?…it's time for the short. It's Brazilian and it's called "I Don't Want To Go Back Alone" (Eu Não Quero Voltar Sozinho) More young love, and not made any easier by the protagonist being blind. Super cute, give it a watch:

Syd: Such a great idea, so well done. I like all the muted colors. Having Leonardo be blind is an interesting way of exploring attraction. Yes we can be drawn to looks, but in the end you need that chemistry, and that's what being queer is kind of about! Just going for what you want. All he knows about his friends is how they sound and interact, and (to Giovana's dismay) he naturally gravitates to Gabriel. Full disclosure: I totally see why the kids make fun of his typewriter, that would drive me crazy.

Lore: I had to work a lot this week. I apologize.
This is an adorable short movie. My mom was sad for Leonardo because he's blind AND gay. She's right, it is unfortunate for him in our straight, seeing world, but the movie never seemed to expect us to pity or feel bad for the kid, which I really appreciated. It's nice to see real people portrayed in real situations that we all go through. Also, I love how stealthy Gabriel is.

Thanks for hanging out, and hopefully we'll see you next week. Until then, do you have any queer shorts you want to share? Post them in the comments and it'll be like a mini film festival!Sydhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00045754089963733245noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6698394276006235696.post-73022698588267897072012-06-12T22:20:00.000-07:002012-06-27T14:15:08.858-07:00Causa Rellena and The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love

Hi, it's date four! So, I guess you like us, huh? Oh, good... that means I can geek out right?

I love Glee, and I saw some interesting similarities with this week's movie. Since I didn't have room for it on the vlog and I'm not doing the review this week I will count those things here: #1 Gay prom dates #2 hand holding at the restaurant #3 "What, you're not graduating!? Why didn't you tell me!? ... "Well yeah, what did you think, I'm failing?!"

It's funny how we're still dealing with these things, huh!? Especially that pesky gf not graduating thing...

Causa Rellena:
What you need (serving size 3-5 people):

- Potatoes (you can cheat like I do and just buy a box of mashed potato flakes... if so, you want to make sure that the end-product is very thick and moldable. If it's sticking to your hands/too watery, add more flakes! Use your hands to mold together)

- Mayonnaise- be prepared to use about half a jar (we use Vegannaise because we're fancy)

- Aji Amarillo/Peruano (if you can't find this... try harder... if you still can't find it, that's fine, just don't call it Causa to any known Peruvians, they will judge you.)

- 1/2 an Onion

- Olive Oil

- 1-2 limes

- Salt and Pepper

- Parsley (for garnishing purposes)

- Mom (to call in case you have any questions regarding spanish vocab)

- Filling (this can consist of chicken, tuna, veggies, avocado, or anything else your little queer heart desires)

I would start with boiling the chicken or preparing any of the aforementioned fillings. While this is happening you can start preparing the potato. If you're mashing actual potatoes... I can't help you. If you cheated and bought the flakes (wee!) it's really easy to get the right consistency. Boil a tiny bit of water first. Slowly add flakes and stir with a wooden spoon. Continue adding flakes or water depending on what you potatoes look like. As mentioned before, you want the end-product to be moldable (like play-doh) and not stick to your hands or be too creamy.

Once those things are done you can put the filling into a bowl and get it ready to go. You will be adding mayo/vego (a lot of this), salt, pepper, lime, aji amarillo, and maybe some olive oil and onions if you feel so inclined. To the potatoes you will add all of the above minus the mayo and onions for now. Many Peruvians have a specific amount of ingredient that they find vital to the dish. I myself find it more important to do what feels right to you and your guests. Taste as you go!

Next, you should have decided if you're doing individual bowls or one big casserole. I usually do a casserole, but individual bowls are nice too. Coat the bottom and sides of the container with the perfectly mixed potatoes. Add the filling. Cover with one last layer of potato. It should remind you a little of a shepherd's pie. Add mayo to the top. Make it look pretty like frosting.

Crumble up that parsley and sprinkle it on top as a garnish. Do this with a bit of pepper as well. Now make a "sauce" that is purely minced onions, olive oil, and more lime and put that all over the top too. Some people like to add an olive or half a hard boiled egg. It looks nice.

Sauce:
About half an onion, olive oil , salt and pepper, and lime.
It's yum.

I think that's it. Enjoy/Disfruten, amigos!

Con cariño, Lorena.

Syd: Can I just add that this beguilingly simple dish is delicious? I used to ask Lorena to make it for all my dinner parties. Seriously, you wan't in on this.
<strike>Trailer</strike> (couldn't find it) Full Movie

Disregard the ridiculous promotional image, this movie is great. The school super dyke (Laurel Holloman, a.k.a. Tina) falls in love with a wealthy popular girl, people don't support it, they get together anyway.

So a simple story, really more about teenage love and pushing boundaries than anything else, but well done and super cute. Randy and Evie are sort of from opposite words—opera vs. classic rock, all A student vs. failing student, single parent household vs. lesbian extended family—but they both end up sharing a love of Whitman's Leaves of Grass and that's what matters. So many great scenes but I don't want to give them away.

I don't even know what else to say, it's cute and silly and why are you even still reading this go watch it.

Queer Rating:
Syd: 7/8ths of a bowl of causa. It's obviously very about two girls, but there really isn't that much drama about it…I don't know, whatever.
Lore: Full bowl
